Vivika's Reflection:
For our project, we researched how much paper is used during standardized testing, specifically EOGs. I was genuinely surprised at how many sheets of paper is wasted every year. Before this project, I knew some paper was being wasted but I never would have thought that there was 3.1 million sheets of paper that were being wasted.
Once we started researching and getting the numbers, reality hit me hard. I realized that if just Wake County middle schools are wasting so much paper, how much paper would be used in all of Wake County, or all of North Carolina? How much paper would be used in the whole nation just for standardized testing? The answer is a lot. Now that I finished the project, I came to the realization that we need to come up with a solution to fix this problem.
How are we supposed to “save the world” by recycling if the education system is tearing the world down? Many people wouldn’t think that standardized testing is a big problem, but I learned that it is! I learned that to make a difference in something you don’t have control over (like standardized testing), get it out to the public and get others to support you. Get your idea/solution out for others to see and support.
In this project, we wrote an article and we are still trying to get it published. We also made a website to raise awareness to the general public, and there is so much more that we can all do! In the future, I plan to try to get Wake County to see how this is hurting our economy, and our world. Maybe, if they see the problem they will fix it.
