For years, society has put an emphasis on recycling and practicing good habits to make this world a healthier place. One would think we would all take this to heart but, surprisingly, not many people do. One major example of things that harm the earth is paper waste in schools. For our project, we focused on paper waste in standardized testing (EOGs). At the end of every year, students take a test in each subject. All in all, roughly 3.1 million sheets of paper are burned in Wake County Middle Schools PER YEAR. 3.1 million sheets is approximately 120 trees. That in itself is bad. What makes it worse is the fact that none of the test papers are recycled. All of the paper materials are burned, contributing to the harmful toxins being sent up into the air. This shocked me immensely and made me think how this will impact the future of the world. To spread awareness of this issue, our group created an article and website that goes into depth about paper waste in EOGs. These sources also talk about what could be done in schools systems around the globe to help with paper waste. Our group came up with ideas on what could be done to help, and we polled the school to see which paper saving technique students liked more. At the end of this project, my mind was completely open to the world around me. I saw how humans had an effect on the world around them and how the littlest things could be detrimental. The amount of paper wasted for testing per year also astounded me. At the beginning, I didn't give it much thought but, near the end, I truly saw how big of a deal it was. This project has inspired me to be more Earth friendly. Whenever I have a chance to recycle papers, I will, because everything has and impact.
